Koi

When Daniel Smith announced their Toucan Triad sampler, some of the artists on WetCanvas decided to start a Toucan Challenge. I decided to do a painting for the challenge, and my first thought was "Koi". The colors in the triad, Ultramarine Turquoise, Quinacridone Gold Deep, and Transparent Pyrrol Orange, were perfect for the koi, and the cracks in the crinkled masa paper can easily be seaweed or the movement of the water. I think this is my first non-flower subject done on masa.

Hi Michelle, I have never used Mesa paper or daniel Smith's paint's but I "have to", now! This is gorgeous! Very well done! Norena from WCW

Go for it, Norena! The colors are great and Masa is a lot of fun to work with.

First of all, I can't imagine wetting the masa paper and then attaching it to a half sheet of paper!!! I'd probably end up with paste all over me and the paper still in a ball or ripped to shreds. The triad was perfect for this. You really nailed the koi!! Good job!!! We'll have to try a masa paper painting day again.

I'm laughing as I picture that.

It was a little harder than sticking it to a quarter sheet, but not really that bad.

Really good painting. I like the colors and texture, as well as the movement in the painting. Masa paper is really fun to paint on and you choose aneffective subject.

Hi! I'm running around all the blogs on my list and I saw this koi painting! Wow, I love it! I will get around to that paper one of these days I reckon!

Hello Michelle, I just saw you on Sandy Maudlin's blog, followed the bread crumbs. This is great - really good composition and perfect balance of colors and values. Most people don't draw these very well to start with, and it doesn't matter much how well you paint after that. You nailed this from the get-go. I also like your poured paintings, I think they are very well done!

Thanks, Nick. If anyone knows koi, you do.

I was happy with the koi painting, the pours - not so much. I had visions of what I wanted in my head, but the painting in my head is usually better than the one on the paper. I will be trying again.
